Long time no play!

Played a game today with my Aramark Supervisor Friend. It was quite a few weeks ago when I played my last game. Resuming play after a long time entails a pain - one which I hate very much - that lasts only for a day or two. I hope it's the same this time too (coz my back's already hurting a bit). I don't know why this is the case and I don't have a friend who's an expert in human physiology.

Today's Report:
The accuracy of my second serve, for which I tried to use the kick serve, was pretty satisfactory. The backhand felt nice too. Need to work on my first serve: consistencey of toss, forward movement of my rear foot and perhaps pronation.

The Kick Serve!

The last time I played tennis with my UF friend Srikant, the rapid change in the weather (or perhaps the tiring set with him[7-6]) resulted in me falling ill. That was a few weeks back. So it was quite refreshing to start playing once again with Avdhut.

Hit quite a few double handed backhands, only one went really fast. The main improvement was the kick serves that I hit today. 3 of them really befuddled Avdhut, and that is to say something, as it is very rare to get past Avdhut with spin alone.

Plus points: 1. Good Spin 2. Confusing trajectory
Need to improve on: 1. Power and accuracy (a lot of kick serves went into the net) 2. Grip Grip Grip - the fyb guy on youtube advised me to try eastern backhand grip for the kick serve. But I am not quite getting the hang of it. Whenever the grip felt right the serve went good and spun a lot. But I am not able to formalize it i.e. I cannot recall how exactly I held the racket when the serve went good. The following is the video copying which really helped a lot:

A serve to imitate!

Right now I am trying to move the rear foot adjacent to the front foot as shown in the video.

The backhand of power within my grasp....

It's a pity that it's raining today. It was only yesterday that I believe I have started to hit the elusive double-handed backhand correctly. While trying to prove to my friend that Nadal has an exquisite backhand - as special as the single-handed backhand of Federer - I chanced upon the following video. It occurred to me that if only I could somehow copy it....

Cross Steps

The technique of cross stepping helps a lot in increasing the on court mobility. Since I survive more on my mobility than on the quality of my shots I am noting down this point.

The following video illustrates the technique:

Even though the instructor may look stupid to some, he's not. Makes his point quite clearly.

Kick Serve VS Slice Serve

The major difference between the aforementioned serves is that in Slice serve you hit with an angle as if -> ' /' instead of '--' in a flat serve. This generates spin along the vertical axis.

In the kick serve you more or less hit the ball at the same angle as that of the flat serve but you think as if you are trying to generate top spin on the ball. Of course this doesn't transpire as one might think, but still it generates a spin component slightly different than the vertical spin needed in the slice serve.

  • The slice serve causes skidding
  • The kick serve increases the accuracy
  • The flat serve need not have any spin component at all - even if it does, it's unintentional. The primary focus is on the speed, irrespective of whether the balls spins or not.

Nearly all the videos on the following link are important:

The one illustrating John Isner's serving technique is of particular interest.
